A handle you can find blind and a light in one box, for the walk that starts in the dark

It is twenty past six on a January morning and the street lamp is out. Your Frenchie is straining toward a curb you can barely see. One hand holds the leash. The other needs something to grab, without looking.

That is the walk this harness is built around. It is a vest harness for a French Bulldog, with a molded PVC handle on the back and reflective thread in the straps. The box also holds a 1.5 m leash and an LED light.

It comes in yellow, orange, red and black, and in two sizes, S and M. Sizing takes two numbers, not one. Read the size section before you order.

The handle is a molded PVC bar, so your fingers find it without your eyes

Most grab handles are a folded strip of webbing. It lies flat against the dog, and you fish for it. This one is a black molded PVC bar with crescent-shaped cut-outs along its length.

Webbing holds each end to the back panel. The bar arches above the panel, so your fingers slide in underneath it. You find it by touch, in gloves, with your eyes on the road.

It does one job. It holds him beside you for two seconds at a curb, at a car door or on the last step. Then you let go.

Slide two fingers under the bar and keep the leash in your other hand. At the curb, take the handle and let the leash hang. He stays beside you, and the leash stops being the only thing between him and the road.

It is not a lifting handle. Carry a Frenchie with both hands under his chest, never by the back of his harness.

The leash ring sits just behind the handle. It is a black D-ring, and the leash clips there.

Reflective thread needs a headlight, and the light in the box makes its own

Reflective material sends back the light that hits it. No headlight, no glow. This harness carries dotted reflective thread through both shoulder straps and the belly strap. It also has gray reflective strips on the panels, four on his back and four on his chest.

The box adds one LED light. It is a small round disc on a spring hook. The casing matches the harness: yellow, orange or red. On the black harness, the casing is clear.

It makes its own light, whether or not a car comes along. A reflective strip cannot do that.

Here is what the light is. It is small. It marks where he is. It does not light your path. On an unlit trail, carry a flashlight.

The box holds three parts, and only the harness comes in two sizes

Here is every part with its numbers. The leash and the light are the same whichever size you pick.

The harness is a vest, not a strap. A chest panel and a back panel are joined by shoulder straps, and a belly strap runs behind his front legs. Gray mesh lines both panels, so the mesh, not the Oxford cloth, touches his coat. A broad Frenchie chest rests on a plate, not on a thin band.

The leash is a plain walking leash. It is a round rope, not flat webbing, and the loop at the top is covered in foam. A snap hook closes on the D-ring.

The four colors share the same black handle, black buckles and gray mesh lining, with the edges bound in the harness color. Yellow, orange and red are bright. Black is not. On the black one, the reflective thread and the clear light do the work.

It goes over his head, then a buckle clicks shut on each side

The neck loop has sliders and no buckle, so his head goes through it. Two sliders sit on the shoulder straps and two on the belly strap. Loosen all four before he is in the room.

Hold the loop wide and ease it over his ears. Let the chest panel rest on his chest. Reach under him and click a buckle on each side. Then tighten until two flat fingers fit under every strap.

Two fingers, not three. A loose harness twists to the side, and owners on r/Frenchbulldogs write about exactly that.

If he only dislikes it a little, give him a day. Leave the harness on the floor where he sleeps. Click a buckle so he hears it. Then put it on indoors for five minutes, with a treat.

After the first walk, look at the fur under each front leg. Flattened or rubbed fur means a strap needs moving. Red or sore skin means the harness comes off and the vet gets a call.

After the third walk, ask whether all four sliders are still where you set them. After the tenth, ask whether the D-ring still sits in the middle of his back, right behind the handle. Straps shift as he learns to move in it. Two minutes of checking now saves you a bad walk later.

The leash clips on his back, so this is a harness for a dog who walks beside you

There is one leash ring, and it is on the back. Here is what that means on a walk. When he lunges, the pull goes straight ahead along his spine. A ring on the chest would turn him toward you. This harness has no such ring.

The pull lands on the chest panel and the belly strap. Nothing on this page promises that it stops a dog from pulling. It holds a dog who is already learning to walk on a slack leash.

Measure his chest and his neck, then check both numbers against the table

Stand him on a flat floor. Wrap a soft tape around his chest, behind the front legs, at the widest point. Write the number down. Then run the tape loosely around his neck and write that down too.

The chest picks the size. The neck confirms it. Both numbers have to sit inside the same row.

The tape reads S from 36 to 47.9 cm (14.2 to 18.8 in) and M from 48 to 63 cm (18.9 to 24.8 in). The two chest ranges overlap from 46 to 50 cm, and there the size that leaves his number farther from the end of its range wins. So 47 cm is S and 49 cm is M.

At exactly 48 cm the two are level, and a tie goes to M, because a harness can be taken in but not let out.

Now the neck. The S neck straps close down to 36 cm, and the M neck straps close down to 44 cm. If his chest points to M but his neck is under 44 cm, the loop will hang loose on him. The Saddle Harness neck starts at 32 cm.

Weight only checks the tape: S is meant for 5 to 7.5 kg and M for 7.5 to 14 kg. Two Frenchies of the same weight can carry different chests. A 25 lb (11.3 kg) Frenchie sits in the weight range of M, and if his chest tapes 46 cm, the tape says S.

When the two disagree, go with the tape. A Frenchie over 14 kg goes by the tape alone.

“I’m getting my first bulldog a week from now and making all my purchases now,” wrote one owner on r/Frenchbulldogs. You cannot put a tape on a dog who has not arrived. For that dog, the tape has to wait.
