A typical 25 lb Frenchie takes the L, and the tape settles the rest

An owner on r/Frenchbulldogs asked for “sizing recommendations for a typical 25 lb frenchie?” That is the first question to answer, so here it is.

Twenty-five pounds is 11.3 kilograms. In this set, that is size L, which is made for dogs of about 6 to 12.5 kilograms (13.2 to 27.6 lb).

You get a denim harness, a collar and a 1.2 meter leash, all in the same dark denim. It is a plain strap harness for a dog who walks beside you. If yours pulls hard, or has rubbed sore in narrow straps before, the sections below say so and name what to buy instead.

Three pieces come in the box, and each one has its own job

The harness carries the leash. You clip the leash to the metal D-ring on the back strap.

The leash is 1.2 meters long, about 4 feet. It has a loop handle at one end and a metal snap hook at the other. That is a short leash. It keeps him close on a sidewalk, at a crossing or in an elevator.

The collar has a plastic side-release buckle and a small metal ring. Hang his ID tag on that ring and leave the leash on the harness.

Every strap is two layers sewn together. The top layer is dark blue denim with yellow contrast stitching. Look closely and you see the woven twill with fine light flecks, the same texture as a pair of jeans.

The layer underneath is flat nylon in the color you pick: blue, red, black or pink. It shows along both edges of each strap and on the inside face. The denim and the yellow thread are the same in all four colors. Only the nylon changes.

Small yellow X-shaped patches of stitching sit where the straps overlap. You find them on the harness, on the collar and on the leash.

The buckle and sliders are plastic, the rings are metal, and the straps have no foam

The harness closes with one plastic side-release buckle. It sits on the back strap, just under the D-ring. Two plastic sliders at the lower corners let you lengthen or shorten the straps.

The D-ring and the snap hook on the leash are metal.

The straps are flat, denim over nylon, with no foam inside. They are 1.5 centimeters wide in M, 2.0 in L and 2.5 in XL (0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 inches).

That suits a dog who walks calmly and likes to match his leash. It does not suit every dog, and the section on who should skip this set says which ones.

Use the weight column when the dog is not here yet, and check it with a tape when he is

Measure the widest part of his chest, right behind the front legs. Find the size whose chest range holds that number. The weight column is your second opinion, and your only opinion if the puppy has not arrived.

Three pairs to picture. A 12 lb dog (5.4 kg) takes the M. A 20 lb dog (9.1 kg) takes the L. A 30 lb dog (13.6 kg) takes the XL.

Once the harness is on, two flat fingers should slide between the strap and his chest. Frenchie owners repeat that rule on Reddit.

The breed standard from the French Bull Dog Club of America stops at 28 pounds, which is 12.7 kilograms. A dog right at that weight sits on the line between L and XL. Take the XL. With a tape in your hand, the chest number decides, and you read it as it is. Say it reads 40 cm. The M holds it and so does the L. But 40 sits right on the edge of the L’s range and 7 cm inside the M’s, so it is the M.

At 48 cm the same test gives the L, and at 55 cm the XL. Exactly halfway through a shared stretch, at 43.5 or 51.5 cm, take the larger, because a harness can be taken in but not let out.

This chart has no gap between sizes: every number from 32 to 66 cm sits in at least one row.

The collar range is narrower than the harness range, so measure his neck too

Collar sizes run 23 to 32 centimeters in M, 27 to 38 in L and 32 to 44 in XL (9.1 to 17.3 inches across the three). Each collar range is 9 to 12 centimeters wide. The chest strap ranges are 15 to 22.

Another owner put the neck problem in one line. Frenchies have “thick, muscular necks that are almost the same width as their heads,” and a collar that is too loose “slides right off.”

Tape his neck where the collar will sit, flat and snug, and find that number in the collar column above, with nothing added to it. Once the collar is on him, two flat fingers should slide under it. That room comes from how you set the collar, not from the tape.

Some necks sit in two rows. Say the tape reads 30 cm. Both the M (23 to 32) and the L (27 to 38) hold it. But 30 is 2 cm from the top of the M’s range and 3 cm from the bottom of the L’s, so it is the L.

Exactly halfway through a shared stretch, at 29.5 or 35 cm, take the larger. Collar sizes have no gap between them: every neck from 23 to 44 cm sits in at least one row.

Fit it on the living room floor before the first walk: loosen, fit, tighten, check

Lay the harness flat and find three parts before the dog comes near it: the buckle, the D-ring and the two sliders. Loosen both sliders all the way.

Put it on him and close the buckle. Tighten the sliders one at a time until two flat fingers fit under the strap. Clip the leash to the D-ring. Let him walk to the kitchen and back.

Set the chest strap on his ribs, then read his fur after the first, third and tenth walk

A puppy owner on Reddit wrote that a harness “always causes chafing/redness under my pup's armpits.” Others write the same about harness after harness, so it deserves a minute before the first walk.

Set the chest strap on his ribs, right behind the front legs. Keep it out of the hollow where the leg meets the body. Then check the two-finger rule again with him standing.

After the first walk, look at his coat where the straps lay. Flattened fur is normal. Skin that looks red the next morning is a reason to stop using the harness and ask your vet.

After the third walk, check the sliders and pull them snug if they have crept. After the tenth walk, measure a puppy's chest again. He may have grown into the next size.

A dog who sits down and refuses the harness needs a day indoors first

A four-month-old Frenchie on her first harness walks was “just stubbornly sitting and wouldn't move,” her owner wrote on r/Frenchbulldogs.

Do not start at the front door. Put the harness on in the living room, hand him a treat, and take it off again before he gets annoyed. Do that a few times a day, and leave it on a little longer each time.

Clip the leash on only after he walks around the room without stopping. Then take that walk outside, and keep it short.

The one ring is on his back, so this set suits a dog who walks beside you

This harness has a single leash ring, and it sits on his back. When he pulls, the leash pulls from behind and above. It does not turn him toward you, and it does not teach him to stop.

A 1.2 meter leash keeps him near your knee, and any longer leash clips to the same ring

Open the box on day one and check five things before he wears it

Count the pieces first: harness, collar and leash. Click the buckle shut and open it again. Slide both sliders along their straps. Close the snap hook and check that the gate springs back. Look at the stitching where the straps overlap.

If any of that is off, tell us before the dog wears it. A buckle that fails halfway down the block is a bad way to find out.

Buying before the puppy arrives? Order by weight and use the 30-day window

If the puppy is not home yet, you have no dog to put a tape on. Ask the breeder for his weight and read the weight column. M starts at 2.5 kilograms.

The M chest strap runs from 32 to 47 centimeters, a spread of 15. That gives a growing puppy room before he needs the L.
