A bib, not a strap: ribbed polyester outside, white air mesh against his coat

“My girl's armpit area was getting irritated by the rubbing from her old harness,” an owner wrote on r/Frenchbulldogs. It is the first thing to ask about any harness. What exactly touches him, and how wide is it?

The Frenchie Flower Harness Set is built around a bib, not a strap. A wide fabric panel covers his chest between the front legs, and a fabric flower sits on the front.

The leash comes in the same color, 1.2 meters long (3.9 ft). That is the whole set: one harness, one leash.

Outside, the fabric is polyester with a fine rib, the look of thin corduroy. The panel edges are bound in the same ribbed tape, around the neck and around both leg openings.

Inside, against his coat, is white air mesh with a honeycomb of small holes. That mesh is what his fur rests on.

The panel is shaped, not flat. It curves around a chest the way a bib does, where a strap would lie as a thin line.

A Frenchie has a broad chest and a short, thick neck. The neck strap has room for that: it adjusts from 37 to 48 centimeters in M and from 41 to 54 in L (14.6 to 18.9 in and 16.1 to 21.3 in). Both the neck strap and the belly strap have a slider.

The flower has five puffed petals and a round center ball in a second color. It is a fabric flower on the chest panel, made of the same rib.

The hardware is plain. Plastic side-release buckles and sliders adjust the straps. A metal D-ring takes the leash. The leash itself is soft woven tape with a hand loop at one end and a metal snap hook at the other.

It is made for a Frenchie of 4 to 14 kilograms (8.8 to 30.9 lb) who walks beside you. It is not made for a dog who hauls. The sections below show where that line runs.

M ends at 8 kilograms, and a 25 lb Frenchie takes the L

Weight comes first here, because it is the one number you have before the dog arrives. The chest tape comes second. Both are in the table.

A 25 lb Frenchie weighs 11.3 kilograms. That sits well inside the L range.

The breed standard caps a show Frenchie at 28 lb, which is 12.7 kilograms. The L goes up to 14. So by weight it covers a Frenchie at the very top of the standard, with 1.3 kilograms to spare. The chest tape still has the last word.

Three dogs, three answers. A 6 kilogram puppy (13.2 lb) is an M. An 11.3 kilogram adult is an L. A 13.5 kilogram adult (29.8 lb) is an L too, but check that his chest is under 60 centimeters before you order.

Now the tape. Say he weighs 7.8 kilograms and his chest measures 54 centimeters. Both sizes cover him, so take the L. Or say he weighs 9 kilograms with a chest of 48 centimeters. The chest fits both sizes, but the M ends at 8 kilograms, so take the L again.

To measure, wrap the tape around the chest behind the front legs, at its widest point. No tape measure in the house? Wrap a shoelace around his chest, pinch the spot where it meets, and lay it along a ruler.

The chest numbers in the table say how far each strap opens and closes. They are not his measurements, so the two ranges overlap, from 45 to 55 centimeters. If his chest lands in the overlap, use the weight column. If he is on the line between two sizes, take the L.

A puppy under 4 kilograms is too small for the M, and you should know that before you order

“I'm getting my first bulldog a week from now and making all my purchases now.” That is a real post on r/Frenchbulldogs. The question under it is the right one: what do I buy for a dog who is not here yet?

For this harness the answer is his weight. Ask the breeder what the puppy weighs today. Under 4 kilograms (8.8 lb), the M is cut too big.

The M chest strap tightens to 42 centimeters (16.5 in) and no further. Our Frenchie Puppy Harness starts at a chest of 32 centimeters and runs to 49 across four sizes, which covers a Frenchie from about eight weeks to eight months. Buy that one first.

Once he is home, step on the bathroom scale alone, then again holding him. Subtract. A puppy from 4 to 7.5 kilograms is an M. Between 7.5 and 8 he fits either. Above 8 he is an L.

There is one leash ring, on his back, so a dog who hauls needs a different harness

On this harness the leash clips to a metal D-ring on the back strap, beside a side-release buckle. That is the only ring. The pull goes straight back along his body, and nothing on the harness steers him.

A ring on the chest works the other way. When he leans, it swings his front end around toward you. A front ring turns him. It does not teach him to stop pulling.

Our front-clip harness has that ring on its chest panel. It is sized by weight: S for 4 to 7.5 kilograms, M for 7.5 to 17.5. If he hauls all day, buy that one.

If he already walks on a slack leash, the single back ring is all you need.

The leash here is 1.2 meters. That keeps him near your knee on a crowded sidewalk. On an open lawn it will feel short.

Fit two fingers under the strap indoors, then look under his front legs after the first walk

One rule shows up again and again on Reddit: “you should be able to fit two fingers in between their chest and the material”. It works on a panel harness too.

Do the fitting on the living room floor, not at the front door. Open every buckle and loosen every slider before he comes near it. Put the harness on him, close the buckles, and tighten one strap at a time until two fingers slide under.

Three parts of the harness touch him: the bib on his chest, the strap over his shoulders and the belly strap behind his legs. The bib should lie flat between the front legs. The belly strap goes behind them, not up in the hollow under his arm.

When you are home from the first walk, lift each front leg and look at the coat under it. You are looking for a line where the panel edge or a strap pressed. Flat fur alone is nothing.

Red skin the next morning, or a dog who keeps licking that spot, means the harness comes off and you call your vet.

Check the sliders again after the third walk and the tenth. A strap that was snug in the living room can be loose after a week of walking.

Some dogs freeze the first time. They sit down on the sidewalk and will not take a step.

Do not drag him to the corner. Put the harness on him indoors, for as long as a meal lasts, then take it off. Do it again the next day.

Clip the leash on only when he walks around the room without stopping. Then take the first outdoor walk, and keep it to the corner and back.

Skip this harness if he hauls, weighs over 14 kilograms, or weighs under 4

Over 14 kilograms (30.9 lb), he is outside both sizes here. Over a chest of 60 centimeters (23.6 in), the L runs out of strap.

Four pale colors, and four things to check when the box arrives

The four harnesses are pale, and the flower is the only strong color on each. Every set comes with a leash in the color of its harness.

Size does not change with color. Pick the color you like, then pick M or L by weight.

Close each buckle and open it again. Slide each slider along its strap. Snap the hook shut and see that the gate springs back. Give the flower one gentle tug.
